Europe prepares strategic raw material reserves: new storage needs create challenges for industry
Europe is accelerating its strategy to secure access to raw materials considered essential to its industrial development.
In September 2026, the European Commission took further steps towards the creation of a European strategic stockpiling system for critical raw materials, moving forward with a pilot project focused on the acquisition, storage, management and availability of these materials.
The initiative comes as the European Union seeks to reduce its external dependence on raw materials used in sectors such as batteries, electric mobility, energy, manufacturing, data centres and advanced technologies.
